NEBDC Signed a Memorandum of Understanding with WBC on Using Sign Language Interpreters for Live Broadcast of Political Party Policy and Candidate Debates

On April 14, the National Election Broadcasting Debate Commission (NEBDC) signed a memorandum of understanding with Welfare Broadcasting Corporation (WBC) on using sign language interpreters for live broadcast of political party policy debates and candidate debates. With the newly signed MOU, live broadcast of political party policy debates and candidate debates televised by WBC will be aided by sign language interpreters.

Although the NEBDC has long been making an effort with public and local broadcasters to improve convenience for deaf and hard-of-hearing voters, there was difficulty in adding individual sign language interpreters when broadcasting debates due to practical limitations.

The NEBDC and WBC showed great chemistry in reaching a consensus as WBC was the first in Korea to live broadcast the recent 20th Presidential Election candidate debate where five sign language interpreters attended. From now on, sign language interpreters will attend when WBC broadcasts political party policy debates and candidate debates.

The memorandum of understanding between the NEBDC and WBC is expected to serve as a momentum to guarantee political rights of deaf and hard of hearing voters as it will increase accessibility.
